There's a lot of talk about the sedentary lifestyle. Desks are killing us. And, the talk is right, if you're not living, you're dying. I don't know too many people who feel like they're living at the desk. So, true to human nature, we treated the symptom not the problem and created active work stations. How novel! Walk on a tredmill while you're doing you're work. Create office spaces that are beautiful traps to keep you in. Play ping-pong at work. That's all lovely, fun and definitely has merit - especially when looking at employee happiness and team morale. But, is that really fixing the problem for the individual? I think not. The issue is not just that your body fails behind a desk - so does your mind.
Yet another study looked at the brain after just 20 minutes of active, mindful meditation (yoga with deep breathing) vs. 20 minutes of strenuous cardio (jogging) - full study here Participants in the study who engaged in a mindful, moving meditation saw increased memory and concentration over their .The results echoed what we yoga teachers have already discovered naturally. Physical activity coupled with mind-body connection creates more profound results during and AFTER exercise. People preform at higher levels after they've taken time to shut off the distractions and focus in on their true being
So, what's the takeaway here. Well, if you're one of those superhumans that can shut off their distractions and find meditation from your stand-up desk, during a round-robin intramural ping-ping championship - great! But, if you're like the rest of us, put down the mouse, back away from the computer and go connect your body with your mind.
